Cherokee County
is most certainly one of the "crown jewels" in the State of Alabama!
Located near the Lookout Mountain Parkway
and just 15 miles from Interstate 59, Cherokee County is 80 miles northeast of
Birmingham, AL, 70 miles southwest of Chattanooga, TN, 65 miles
southeast of Huntsville, AL, and 90 miles northwest of Atlanta, GA. For
this reason, our county is an excellent pivotal point from which one can
discover some of the greatest treasures in the South!
Home to 24,609
residents (2007 demographics),
Cherokee County is located in the northeast section of Alabama. Cherokee
County can best be described as a
rural agricultural community whose solid
economic environment is comprised of fertile lands and an abundant water supply. Agriculture is the
county's largest industry, involving not only row crops but also new
agri-science businesses such as seed production and ornamental plants.
Cherokee County is
blessed with abundant natural beauty, parks, moderate climate, scenic mountains
and beautiful Lake Weiss. Known as "The Crappie Capital of the World," Weiss
Lake attracts fishermen from all over the country to enjoy the area and to
pursue its large and abundant Crappie, as well as catfish and bass. Weiss Lake's
recreational areas provide a beautiful place where you can enjoy fishing, boating, water skiing, jet skiing,
picnicking, sailing, or swimming.
Weiss Lake makes
tourism a vital part of the local economy. This 30,200-acre impoundment of
the Coosa, Chattooga, and Little Rivers, is a hydro-electric lake owned by
Alabama Power Company. Weiss Lake is the place to be if you're into lake-fun!
Other recreational
facilities include baseball and softball fields, an 18-hole golf course,
public tennis courts, and soccer leagues. Rock-climbing at Cherokee Rock Village,
swimming, canoeing and kayaking, and hiking and picnicking at Little River
Canyon Mouth Park add to the sporting fun that can be found in Cherokee County.
Nearby Little River
Canyon National Preserve, historical sites, points-of-interest and town
festivals complement the county's appeal as an attractive place to live, work, and
visit.
The county school
system offers the more than 4,000 students of Cherokee County extensive learning
opportunities, including the traditional curriculum, fine arts, vocational
training, and technology. With the many athletic programs and
extra-curricular activities at each school, students are assured a well-rounded,
quality education.
Cherokee County is also
home to Gadsden State Community College's newest campus. This new GSCC
facility will house a new nursing school, the Cherokee County Chamber of
Commerce, and a new economic development office. This new facility, a
collaborative partnership between local and state government, will also house a
new sports arena and community theater.
Cherokee County
is the host of many local
areas of interest. One nearby area is known as Cherokee Rock Village. Rock formations over 100 feet high form unusual
observation decks, inviting rock-climbing enthusiasts from around the
country. This area is located on an old pioneer road and
Indian trail that is today called the Lookout Mountain Trail, a trail
known to have existed during the Civil War. Cherokee Rock Village
was one of the sites for filming the 2006 movie Failure to Launch
starring Matthew McConaughey & Sarah Jessica Parker.
Also in the area is Yellow Creek Falls, which drops 100 feet into
Weiss Lake. Nearby DeSoto State Park and DeSoto Falls are a
nature-lover's paradise. Walking and hiking trails, streams, and the
beauty of nature abounds. This area boasts many activities to choose from:
fishing, swimming, rock climbing, hiking, nature walks and "critter"
watching.
Golfers may enjoy a day at either Silver Lakes Golf Course, a part of
the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail or the Stonebridge Golf Course. Both
courses are located within 45 minutes of Cherokee County . The Cherokee
County Country Club golf course is located in Centre. The
Huntsville Space and Rocket Center is also located within an hour’s
drive.
